What is an IP Camera

IP stands for internet protocol, and an IP security camera is a digital video camera which transmits data over a computer network or the internet. It basically works like a high resolution webcam that plugs into your computer network, the same way you plug your computer into your router. The average user with a bit of tech savvy can set up the system and save the costly fees of professional security installers. It's as simple as plugging the camera in and installing some software. There is no need for a power supply such as a battery or ac adapter, as the camera is powered over the ethernet cable (PoE). If your router is not capable of PoE, there is a plug-in adapter that costs about $45. These cameras are low-voltage and cost very little to operate, compared to the value the user gets from the added peace of mind. For less tech-savvy customers, there is a flat fee of $99 to have one of our customer service representatives remotely log in to your computer to set up the software and make sure the camera is recognized on your system.

There are 2 kinds of IP cameras. Centralized IP cameras require a separate Network Video Recorder (NVR) to store the recorded images. Decentralized IP cameras, such as the Mobotix Q24, have built-in recording capabilities. Images are saved on a hard drive within the camera and can also record directly to digital storage media such as flash drives, hard drives or network attached storage (NAS). The benefit of a decentralized system is that it eliminates the possibility of a central point of failure, as well as the need to purchase costly proprietary video management software (VMS).

IP security cameras offer higher resolution than traditional analog cameras, usually in the range of 1-3 megapixels. Higher resolution translates to clearer images and a wider field of vision. Other advantages include the ability to log-in remotely from any computer anywhere, even from your smartphone, to monitor the images being captured. The remote user even has the ability to pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ)  to navigate the image they are viewing. The camera can also send an alert when suspicious activity is detected. Some camera models are capable of night vision recording or 360 degree hemispheric views, some models are weatherproof, perfect for areas prone to harsh conditions.
